A critic rightly defines this comic Broadway in the following words:

“If God were even half as funny, adorable and witty as Jim Parsons, there would’ve been no religious battles at all. Instead, we’d all be repenting for our sins in the hopes of a warm welcome at the gates of heaven.”

In this historical metaphysical transformation, Parsons’ character is temporarily inhabited by God. Of all the sinful places in the world, looks like he apparently chose Studio 54 in New York to make his grand appearance in May 2015.

The play takes a jab at the Almighty’s sarcastic sense of humor, where he reveals (through Parsons), that he thinks of the Book of Job as a hoot. Over the next few scenes, Parsons creates a new series of Commandments for mankind with the help of David Javerbaum - the comical genius behind the storyline of this Broadway.

Donning a toga-styled garment over a pair of jeans, sneakers and a shirt, God (aka Parsons) sits on a large white couch like a divine talk show host (definitely giving Jon Steward a run for his money). He is accompanied by his two favorite archangels: Gabriel and Michael.

Tim Kazurinsky as Gabriel delivers a deadpan performance as he reads out quotes from what looks like a (fake) Gutenberg Bible, as God remarks how the publishing industry has been running downhill ever since!

Christopher Fitzgerald plays Michael, a bratty and sharp-witted archangelic assistant who works on the crowd, with a microphone in hand, and asks questions from the audience.

The Broadway comes across more like a session to receive the infinite wisdom of God, as opposed to interrogating him. Parsons is hilarious, as always, and explains how humankind’s destructive behavior and dunderheadedness largely stems from a misinterpretation of his (God’s) divine message. He proclaims that while certain words and sentences truly mean what they say, others leave a wiggle room.

Tackling the issues of homosexuality, Parsons offers a weird twist of faith that God, in reality, did create Adam and Steve (and not Adam and Eve). It is only when that wily snake tricked them into eating from the Tree of Knowledge to alter their lifestyle that God switched to Plan B.

After eating the forbidden fruit, Steve and Adam were full of guilt and despair. To help them alleviate their guilt, God turned Steve into Eve after a simple operation (a reference to Bruce Jenner’s recent sex-change operation). To top it off, Parsons sweetly concludes that God does not hate gays and lesbians. To him, everyone is equally worthless!
